Travel Stories

Australia is one of the most backpacker and travel friendly countries in the entire world.  Whether your holiday is a short one or a multi-month adventure, there is something to satisfy every traveler’s taste.  Like any other destination, there are always a number of things you should be mindful of before your journey! Take consideration of these nuances listed below:

1) Kangaroos: Ah, yes… Australia the land of kangaroos!  Actually, unless you find yourself at a zoo or traveling the countryside, you’ll probably never see one.  Cities are not the place for these marsupials, and if you hop from city to city during your Australian destination, you might be disappointed.  However, if you take a campervan trip and spend some time in national parks or in more deserted areas, kangaroos are extremely abundant! In fact, they are so abundant that driving at night becomes dangerous, so it is best to travel only in daylight hours. Image Source:  www.wallspaperlibrary.com

2) Alcohol: There is a lot to say about drinking in Australia.  First off, and most important for budget travelers, alcohol prices are some of the highest in the entire world! Keep that in mind when budgeting for your trip.  Regardless of price, drinking alcohol is a staple of Australian culture and many Aussies do indulge.  The Australian government is very strict when it comes to alcohol regulations.  If you’re clearly intoxicated at a bar, it is against the law for bartenders to serve you more alcohol.  If they do, the bartender themselves and their establishment faces exorbitant fees.  Additionally, if you’re asked to leave a bar and do not, you could be fined upwards of thousands of dollars.  We aren’t sharing this information to scare you away from having a good time.  Use common sense and good judgement and the local pub could turn into one of your favorite parts of your trip! 3) The Outback: Australia, compared to the rest of the world, looks quite small on a map.  Looks are deceiving.  When you are gearing up to travel from one destination to another, be vigilant in researching how long you will be driving from place to place.  Most areas of interest are many, many hundreds of kilometers apart and will take hours to drive.  Be road smart: carry lots of food and water, emergency supplies and rest every 2 hours. 4) The Sun: There is no ozone layer over Australia. Because of this, the incidence of skin cancer is high; two to three times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK. People who visit Australia comment that the sun literally feels stronger than it does in their native country. It is best to apply sun screen every day, even when it is cloudy. Don’t let a sunburn or extreme sun poisoning ruin your trip abroad. Image Source: www.desktopwallpaperhd.net

5) The Beauty: Australia has some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the entire world.  Do yourself a favor and plan to travel outside of the cities and see some of it.  From the Great Ocean Road, to Uluru, to King’s Canyon, to the Great Barrier Reef, to the Tasmanian wilderness, you’ll be blown away by Australia’s beauty if you take the time to experience it.
