Day 1: start out in style! It’s 9:30, Cairns Airport. We made it, all the way from Sydney! With a huge hangover, probably one hour of sleep, party hats, and dark rings under our eyes. It’s the day after my birthday. But as I’m only meeting up with my travel buddies today, we decided to expand my special day to “the awesome 48 hour celebration of turning 24 again” (because I can’t face being 25).
Let the party begin! However, you can’t start a good road trip without some preparations. So here’s our to-do list for day one: Pick up car and van: check. Crashing car into another car on the car park of the rental company: check. Being lucky that the guy from the rental company is really nice and lets us go anyways: check. Keep calm and carry on: check.
Find the nearest Coles and stuff the van with rice, pasta, canned veggies and beer: check. Buy a tent and air mattress: check. We're ready to hit the road!!! First we pick up our friend Maya who is in Cairns already and will spend the next couple of days with us. Thank god she is much better prepared than we are and has a HUGE book listing most of the camp sites in Australia, paid and free ones. We pick the only free camp site in the area around an hour and a half north of Cairns and get going.
We arrive just before sunset to set up the tent and have a nice, cold shower and an “Apero” (which is French for drinks before dinner) to get in the right mood for our low budget trip. On the menu for tonight are sausages and instant mashed potatoes. Yummy!
However we don’t get much further than sausages when our one gas cooker suddenly catches fire. After a short moment of panic and a dozen emptied water bottles we manage to put out the blaze. The gas cooker turned into a bunch of melted plastic and the wooden table we used is left with a huge black stain. Looks like it’s just gonna be sausages and plain toast tonight.
Another beer and we decide to hit the sack - we are all pretty exhausted from our first exciting day. We decided to take turns with sleeping in the tent and the van. So me and Ophe get the pleasure of spending the first week in the tent. Bottom line: It can only go uphill from now on!
