With some 80,000 other runners Park My Van took to the Sydney Streets on Sunday to take park in Sydney’s annual City 2 Surf fun run. It's 14km over an undulating course that snakes east from the city out to the famous Bondi Beach. We raised $600 for our chosen charity Street Smart that do good work with the homeless in and around Sydney. So a big Thankyou! to all our supporters and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
The day was a little chilly in the morning but some stretching and bananas at our rally point in the city and we were good to go. The course starts at the corner of Collage and William streets - we were in the (vaguely) serious Blue 'runners' group - but that didn't stop the costumes and frivolity. Everyone seemed pretty happy and in good spirits with load upbeat music pumping to get us in the mood with jackets flying everywhere as people de-robed before the race.
Five minutes after our group's official start time we'd filtered down and cross the line. The jovial banter stops and we focus on the run. The route heads east, passes under Kings Cross and out past Edgecliff. The bands start just after that - the police brass, YMCA blarring from a private house with half the race partaking the in the Y - M - C - A motions as they run past, blue smurfs jumping around being... blue...
Then comes the infamous heart break hill. Situated rather unfortuitously at the 7km mark of the 14km race - just when you think that you’ve more or less had enough. It's a long slow climb that lasts about a km before it flattens out and you've got a couple of uneventful km's leading down to Bondi.
The last few bends of the course arrive and you catch a glimpse of the water and you know you're home! It's a downhill run into Bondi and there's definitley a lift in all the runners. We meet at a local cafe after, squeeze in with all the other runners, and compare notes and times. A bacon and egg roll and a couple of beers and it's a nice - if tiring - start to a sunny Sydney August morning.
