Townsville: A short introduction.
A trip to Magnetic Island starts with the ferry from Townsville. However, Townsville is so much more than just a gateway to the Island. It is a lovely city, with lovely people and lots of things to do. Skipping Townsville, you’d miss out a lot. So here is a bit about it before I get to the island part.
The best day to visit Townsville I guess is a Sunday. There is a cute market going on with farmers from the area selling fruit and veggies for more than fair prices. A good opportunity to stock up your supplies before heading to Magnetic island!
Also, vintage lovers and fashion victims might get lucky on this market. And if you’re looking for a different kind of souvenirs, this is where you should be. A bit of live music and nice cafes along the road help creating a good vibe for this place.
Just before sunset, we make our way up Castle Hill. This mountain in the heart of Townsville rises up about 280 meters and clearly sticks out from the skyline of the city. Up there we a breathtaking panoramic view of Townsville and the Islands towards the seaside and of overgrown mountains towards the inland. During sunset, Castle Hill itself has this beautiful brown-reddish glow about it that seems to warm me up from the inside...truely amazing!
However, the way up and down the Hill is another experience by itself. Hundreds of fitness-freaks pilgrimage up the hill at dusk. Lazy as we are we took the car up but the streets are completely taken over by joggers and pedestrians. It’s quite a challenge to steer the car down the hill without accidentally running over them!
